After four l-o-n-g months, it was finally time for Maui trip #2 of 2013! Ok, it wasn't exactly 4 long months as we had a fantastic summer, but these kids were certainly excited to be heading back to paradise. Ok, mom and dad were too, I'm not gonna lie, especially since Jason was WAY overdue for some R&R. Plus, trading 50-degree weather for 84 degree weather was a huge bonus.
As mentioned before, Jason was unable to be with us for Maui trip #1 because of a work emergency, so this was our "make-up" trip. We rented a bigger place this time (3-bedroom, 3 bath penthouse!) and invited our good friends Rachel and Sterling to join us, along with their sweet 2-year old daughter Amity. Baby boy Culbertson was in utero so technically he joined us as well. I suppose if you count in utero vacations this was technically Theron's 3rd trip to Hawaii. I swear, these boys.
The boys got to take advantage of Daddy's Alaska airlines boardroom pass and enjoy some nice views of the planes while eating loads of free pancakes. There was a pancake machine that these two could not get enough of. I think we consumed something like 8 pancakes. Pre-paradise carb loading.
Theron's second time on a plane already. He did really well for such a long flight. Six hours with a 1- year old could be horrific, but he kept the screams and squealing to a minimum. Special thanks to the nice people sitting around us both to and from Hawaii for making googly eyes at him and generally acting interested in his antics. This really helped pass the time as I stared around jealously as most normal people quietly read, slept or watched movies. Mamas get to do none of the above.
And thank goodness for digi-players to keep the older one occupied.
Upon arrival we hit up Costco, explored the spacious condo, then hit the pool!
Second day we went into Lahaina and saw the large Banyan tree.
We also hit up a beach close by and Soren had so much fun playing in the waves with Dad. Theron sat his butt on the beach with sand toys, perfectly content.
The pools, once again, did not disappoint. Here we have Theron in his floaty thing but these are the only pics you will see of that. Shortly after he started crying and refused to be constrained by such a contraption for the rest of the trip. He preferred being held or riding on backs. Fair enough.
Found this guy on our drapes that evening. Cute. I imagine he found his own way out because I never did quite see where he ended up.
These two hung out a lot together. Or maybe it was Theron hanging out with big girl Amity, but in any case you would often find them sitting together ... or hiding out, giggling, in one of the many bathrooms.
Another beach day. I think this was Black Rock. Theron did his favorite things: play in the sand and eat. Soren spent most of the time rolling around in the waves.
Just because you are in Hawaii doesn't mean you can't make a batch of brownies. Sometimes you get a craving. Baby boy Culbertson gets hungry. Good think we had gourmet kitchen to accommodate our baking needs. This was also great because all of us love to cook. We made some fantastic dinners every night. All Viking appliances and granite countertops .... ahhh.
More pics of the kiddos hanging out together....
What a fabulous balcony, yes Amity?
Are you playing games again Soren?
As you can imagine, swimming is the thing we did most. With several great kid-friendly pools, the little guys had a blast. By the end Theron came to LOVE the pool, especially the one with the waterfall that initially he was afraid of. Every time we'd pass by that pool he'd try to leap out of our arms so he could, I can only imagine, swim himself to the waterfall and get behind it. I spent a lot of time behind the waterfall.
This pic really exemplifies Theron's flojo-nature. I'll have to describe the flojo nature in another post. It's a thing of its own. Basically, Theron likes to chill.
Our second main location was the beach. Both Theron and Amity could spend hours playing with sand toys, and Soren could spend all day in the ocean with the guys. Not surprisingly, we went through all our sunscreen and then some. I spent a good portion of the vacation rubbing white cream into soft baby skin. But hey, no one got burned!
Besides pools and beaches, there was also a lot of eating. What would a blog post be without a recap of Theron's intake?
Silly time with Soren before kiddo bed time.
We took a trip to Whaler's village one day. Theron loved him some Hawaiian Cookie Co cookies. I had a hard time getting him to leave voluntarily. He left with a tummy full of samples.
A shot from one of my morning runs. I love running the beach path along Kaanapali. So beautiful. It was one of the things I was really looking forward to upon coming back.
Some other highlights from our trip:
-Watching Jason and Sterling jump off Black Rock.
-Watching Sterling do a forward somersault with twist off Black Rock (or something like that, I don't know my dive terms). That was crazy cool.
-Getting slapped by Slappy Cakes.
-Pina Coladas, pool side.
-The millions of dollars we spent on pool side smoothies for smoothie-loving Soren.
-Dinners on the lanai overlooking the resort.
-Jason catching toads in the pond.
-Theron waking up excited every morning to race around the condo, half naked.
-Opening up the accordion windows/doors every morning to let the fresh Maui air in.
-The boys' trip up to the crater. Temperature drop + no coats = cold.
-Shaved ice in Lahaina. Many trips.
-Beach time at Wailea. First time renting a beach umbrella. Totally worth it.
-Reminding ourselves that it wouldn't be a Hawaiian vacation if one of our kids didn't poop in the pool. This time both boys had near disasters. Ugh.
And, back on the plane. Aloha Hawaii! Until next time....
